The Bureau of Perpetual Displacement was established to monitor a single button and confirm, with each press, that it has moved. It has never moved up. The Bureau considers this consistency, not a malfunction.
Each press is measured in certified centimeters of downward travel and added, without exception, to the running total. No press has ever produced a negative reading. No press ever will.
The increasing size of each measurement is not a bug in the instrument. It is simply how displacement behaves once you stop expecting it to stop.
As total displacement accumulates, the Bureau upgrades its official classification of the situation, from Negligible Slippage through several stages of concern, arriving eventually at Geological Timescale Event. No tier has ever been downgraded.
It doesn't, particularly. The button was only ever going to sit there being a button. But there is something honest about a system that tells you exactly what it's going to do, and then does it, forever, slightly further down the page each time.
